he called me back, he said there wasn't really hardly any work for me to do, like around his house or surveying, he said when he could find me some work, that he start me off w/like a very small surveying job, and when i get better at it, he's get a bigger one, he said that he'd call me when he did

well thats a good start. at least he knows that you are interested in doing some work for him, so when he has some he might ask you. at least you tried and it may pay off later.
